I've experimented with other units, but they generally disappoint. And phoenix guard slaughter basically anything that dares go head on against them. With your own flyers, siege weapons, and archers to target enemy archers, the lack of shields on your front line doesn't matter. Late game some of my armies will keep the sea guard/archer/eagle claw combo, but will add a couple of phoenix guard to anchor the flanks, other armies will be phoenix guard, dragon princes, dragons, eagle claws, and archers.

Enemy armies will have lost multiple units by the time they reach my lines, I'm basically immune to flyers, cavalry, and unshielded heroes/lords, and any free unit can deliver support or flanking fire in support of others.

Sure, sea guard don't have quite the strength in numbers spearmen do, but giving your army another 75% or so firepower more than makes up for it. Mid game I'll move into sea guard, eagle claws, and armoured archers. To start with I use purely spearmen and archers. Later game replace some spears using phoenix guards, with dragons, chariots in the army should be a standard build for HE. Never bother whitelions, they are useless especially with buidling in tier3 without later upgrades, eagle are also useless. Though keeping 1 unit of Swordmasters may be good just to break up the frontline without additional helps. Whitelions and Swordmasters are in an embarrasing situation, as you don't need such units in Warhammer. They can provide protection against cav and additional range damages.

They are superior as they are spearmen and archers. Sea guards have less range and less damage compares to archer, their melee skill is also worse than spearmen. They requires higher maintaining cost with only some armour improved, which do not give you an eage if being attacked by cav or infantry, and it requires more arrows to win a shooting between 2 missle troops. Light-armoured archers just don't seem to pay off for me. Basicly they are the only frontline units of HE. Comparing to phoenix guard they have shields and much cheaper to maintain. Spearmen are what you will use all the time, and their is no replacement for them.
